Talking to Don Payne, screenwriter of “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” one wants to believe that the property is in good hands. A self-professed “Marvel Kid,” Payne says he always liked the realism of Marvel Comics because they were set in New York and Los Angeles, and it didn’t hurt that characters like Peter Parker were easy to identify with for a nerdy young boy. “I have been a Marvel Comics fan since I was very, very little, and so it kind of fit my career path, my career goal to work on a Marvel Comics film.” Writer/ Co-Executive Producer of “The Simpsons,” Payne mentions having worked with Stan Lee on an episode in which Stan Lee insists that he can turn into the Hulk, “It didn’t make it in, but I actually pitched at the end that he says, ‘Oh great, well, Flame on,’ and he flies away.” Payne also teases, “There may be one reference to a Simpsons joke from a long time ago. See if you can find it.”
Payne describes himself as a geek who hates spoilers, so he tries to keep things light. He even confesses his trepidation at visiting the set of “Battlestar Galactica” later that afternoon where they would be filming the season finale, “I want to see it, but I don’t want to see it.” The words, “I don’t want to say too much” are frequent as Payne tells us, “I think everyone has heard that Frankie Ray is in there, and there are some other references, but I hate spoilers … so I don’t want to say anything.”

Back in November 2006, on one of the coldest snowy days the Pacific Northwest has seen in years, UGO was invited to the set of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in Vancouver for a sneak peek at the upcoming sequel. If you’ve ever been to Vancouver, let me just preface this report by saying that the words cold and snowy don’t normally apply to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. While schools were closed and the city was almost completely snowed in for the day, the crew of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer soldiered on despite the wintry elements. Thankfully, for us online comic geeks, it was all well worth braving the sub-zero temperature in exchange for a look at things to come. At the time, however, much of what we now know about the Silver Surfer from the scattered updates in recent months was under lockdown and shrouded in secrecy for our visit. Given the legacy of the character in the comic, it was clear that the production was intent on ensuring the Silver Surfer’s transition to the big screen would be a major event done right.
After a whirlwind day that began with a casual lunch date with screenwriter Don Payne, it was off to Vancouver Film Studios to catch a firsthand look at the sleek and aerodynamic Fantasticar with conceptual illustrator Tim Flattery plus get the goods on how the sequel to the 2005 comic to film adaptation was shaping up. After checking out the state-of-the-art and almost fully functional Fantasticar, we were quickly whisked off to speak with the four major cast members, view concept art for the film, chat with director Tim Story, watch a preview of the film with effects master Scott Squires, before an insanely frigid late night date on the streets of downtown Vancouver where a section of the city was transformed into Shanghai, China, the locale where Dr. Doom does battle with the Fantastic Four.
Although the 2005 Fantastic Four film was a financial success, many fans believed the movie could have performed even better. After mixed reviews from critics and hardcore comic fans, it was unclear what direction Tim Story would take the sequel in. Although much of the film was shrouded in secrecy at the time of our visit, it was clear that Story was intent on listening to the Fantastic Four fanbase to deliver a more fan friendly and faithful film while taking the franchise to new heights.
But what can fans expect aside from the inclusion of The Silver Surfer? Let’s take a look at the first in our series of set reports from our November 2006 visit to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
The Fantasticar with Conceptual Illustrator Tim Flattery:
Director Tim Story didn’t want to blow out the Fantasticar’s appearance too early in the franchise, and I can’t say we’re not glad he saved the Fantasticar for the sequel. Not long after arriving at Vancouver Film Studios, we were taken to the location of the Fantasticar where we met designer Tim Flattery, who most fans will remember as the man who designed the Batmobile in Batman Forever. Complete with working intercoms and flashy monitors, plus detachable pods, the hour-glass shaped Fantasticar looks like a tricked out version of the landspeeder from Star Wars with a single seat up front for Reed Richards, two behind for Johnny Storm and Sue Storm, and a larger single seat in the rear for The Thing. As Flattery revealed, “… it’s the coolest thing in the world.” Costing somewhere in the vicinity of $1.2 million to build while taking four months to complete, the 20-foot long Fantasticar is indeed one cool vehicle that can reach a top speed of 550 miles per hour with a peak altitude of upward of 30,000 feet.
Although it can’t actually take off or hover, the Fantasticar does, in theory, possess an ION Generator and a spinning Photon Accelerator, which helps it to achieve flight for take off and landing in the film. As well, like in the comic books, the Fantasticar can also break into three separate pods depending on the action, which serves to protect the characters from danger and also serves to help the production in terms of shootability.
As Flattery revealed, the Fantasticar was indeed designed with the comic in mind, but only to a point, “I’m a comic nut, so I always try and pay homage to what’s been there and what I grew up with, and what I know people are familiar with. But, in this case, what’s been done in the comic books on the Fantasticar, it only shows up here and there, [and] it just didn’t apply for the movie. I tried to keep it in the back of my head, but really, the tone of the movie and the tone of the characters in the movie are what drove this as opposed to the comic. The homage to the comic is that it does break apart like it does in the comic. In the comic, I remember it being white. This was going to be blue for the longest time, then we ended up changing it to silver later on down the road. It looks sleeker, it helps with the Silver Surfer and it complements him.”
Designing a vehicle for normal sized characters doesn’t look like an easy task, so when it came time to design the craft with a specific payload in mind, namely Ben Grimm, Flattery elaborated on the challenge, “It was difficult to get Michael Chiklis in there in that suit. Just getting him off the floor is difficult. It’s something that concerned me from the beginning, because the only way to get into the vehicle is to drop in it. If you notice, you have to walk up on the belt line, stick your foot down on the seat and slide in, because it’s so low-profile. So when we were filming, I’m just sitting there, scratching my head, going, “How is a guy in 70 lbs of rubber going to fit?” If you’ve seen that suit, it’s huge. There’s a lot of mass on him, so it’s not easy to move around. So, the best scenario is just walk up the back and get over, because it’s the only way in.”
The Director, Tim Story:
With only a month of shooting left to go as we caught up with Tim Story, it was clear the director was happy about the direction of the production and where the Fantastic Four were headed in the sequel. In a meeting room lined with conceptual art that depicted much of the explosive action and urban cityscapes used in the film (even several fantastically crafted conceptual drawings of the Silver Surfer), Story was happy to address some of the concerns many fans had between the two films, even elaborating on some of the changes made to the characters as a result of listening to the Fantastic Four fan base.
“One of the biggest things that I heard and I knew about is that they wanted to make Ben Grimm’s brow bigger and bigger and bigger,” the director said. “We had it rather large at some point and found that the biggest problem we’d run into is that you couldn’t light his eyes. Any time I lit a set, his eyes would be in a shadow, and [Michael] Chiklis, who was so amazing at being this character, the last thing you want to do is hide his eyes from everybody, so we had to scale back the brow from what we originally thought we were going to do.”
Story went on, “they [the fans] always wanted Doom to be more of a badass, and I’ve taken that idea to mean they wanted action. They wanted action, action, action, which was the main point that I got the most, and I think we deliver on that 100 percent. Those are three of the top [concerns]. There are other things, which I don’t always respond to in my blogs, not at this point, because the movie has already taken care of itself, but in the early parts of pre-production and filming, I continued to read things on the Web and anything I could use, and could bring to the screen, I would.”
In terms of his approach to the sequel from a practical standpoint given the legacy of the comic book, Story talked at length about the characters and where he started to expand on their personal arcs.
“It’s interesting,” he said, “because first and foremost, you just think about the characters and their personal stories and where you can go with those. One of the biggest things that we all know about is that Richards and Sue at some point get married. It seemed obvious that the next chapter would involve them getting married, because at some point they have kids and so on. There were some things that were fairly obvious. I knew that Ben and his last story was all about wanting to get out of this body that he had been given. Now, he’s comfortable, so apart from being comfortable, where do you go with he and his girlfriend Alicia’s relationship? Johnny, who is the biggest playboy and the cool kid that you can imagine. What responsibilities can you thrown on him that he now has to deal with? There are some other surprises that we’ve definitely taken the liberty to go and do that. I’d definitely have to keep the surprise, but there’s some stuff in there that, when you think about, “Where else can you go with these powers that we can take full advantage of?” In getting to the sequel, you first start there, and then the next thing is the idea that I want more action in it. I want to bring back Doom and have Doom be a real issue. In bringing all that together, I think we’ve accomplished that.”
In a world now filled with several big screen comic book adaptations, one question that came to mind was what makes the Fantastic Four so unique within a crowded marketplace of big screen super heroes. As Story explained, much of the deeper complexities of the characters are still universal and relatable to many in both films.
“As much as I want to be able to expand on a lot of other things, I think that the first film hit on this family element. The other big issue was the Fan Four taking advantage of their stardom, and making money and being kind of, well… rich. To bring up this idea that now they actually are in business and they are well off, for all the comic book characters we have out there, they are the most well off as far as running a corporation. There was a lot of that which I wanted to get involved in the sequel. I wanted to bring a high-tech world to it in terms of Reed Richards, because in the first one, the story really kind of revolved around him not making a lot of money, and I had more of an industrial space. In this case, I wanted him to be a little more prone to what we know him for, which is technology. So, it was all of those. Then, of course, there was the Silver Surfer.”
Although the Silver Surfer was under lockdown while we were on set, Story did share his thoughts on the addition of the character and what fans can expect.
“We’ve kept him away from human contact for as long as possible in the movie, just to keep him shrouded in mystery. Then, when he does get into contact with people, I wish I could tell you, but there’s a third thing you guys will find out about that keeps him based in reality. At some point, he’s a guy from space, so what are you going to do? After that, it’s just the way we got the character captured and the CGI of how he moved, and how he actually responds. He does have conversations in this movie, and so you’re talking to a real person who has a history and understands and reacts to emotion. Although he is a space man, an alien, we keep him very grounded in reality.”

Marvel and 20th Century Fox are pulling out all the stops when it comes to this summer’s Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer. First they put legal tender featuring the Silver Surfer into circulation. Now they are going to drop twenty world-class skydivers into the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race.
Here is the press release they sent out:
A team of 20 world-class skydivers and a world champion sky surfer will execute a spectacular aerial stunt at Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The pre-race stunt will promote the upcoming motion picture Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer and will be attended by all four of the film’s principal stars.
The one-of-a-kind event - which will be witnessed live by 180,000 racing fans as well as Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer stars Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis - will be part of the NASCAR special televised pre-race show on Fox Sports (5p.m. ET).
The stunt begins at 13,000 feet, as the 20 skydivers in flaming orange jumpsuits create a freefall formation of the numeral 4. Then, the beloved comic book icon, the Silver Surfer, as enacted by world champion sky surfer Oliver Furrer, will surf the sky at 125 miles per hour, smoke trailing from his silver board, and break through the 4 formation.
A freefall video crew will capture all the action from this one-of-a-kind stunt. The video feed from two additional sky diving cameramen will be transmitted live on NextelVision JumboTrons at track and broadcast along with interviews with the film’s cast members, who are serving as honorary race officials. The Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer cast also will be taking part in various activities around the track prior to the main event.
“This one-of-a-kind event continues the long-standing tradition of exciting pre-race entertainment for the Coca-Cola 600,” said Jerry Gappens, senior vice president of events and marketing for Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “Our fans and a worldwide television audience are in for a fantastic pre-race show.”
In Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer, the first family of superheroes meets their greatest challenge yet, when the enigmatic, intergalactic harbinger of doom, the Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. As he races around the globe wreaking havoc, Reed (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue (Jessica Alba), Johnny (Chris Evans) and Ben (Michael Chiklis) must muster all their powers to battle the forces of evil before all hope is lost.
Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer, opening in theaters everywhere June 15, is the second installment of the live-action film series based on what fans around the globe know as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine.” Fantastic Four, directed by Tim Story and released in the summer of 2005, had a worldwide theatrical gross of $330 million and became one of Twentieth Century Fox’s most successful DVD titles ever.

I went to the cinema that day to watch At World’s End, expecting to watch the same Pirates style that we are used to from the previous two movies. Obviously, I have underestimated this movie. It was nothing like I have expected.
So here’s the basic story of the movie (no major spoilers here):
The movie starts from where we left off last time. Captain Barbossa is resurrected to help Will, Elizabeth and the others to bring Jack Sparrow back from Davy Jones Locker.
Meanwhile, Lord Cutler Beckett continues to execute pirates and says that they now face extinction. Cutler, having obtained the heart of Davy Jones, forces the Flying Dutchman to work for him, killing the remaining pirates at sea. Now the pirates from all the seven seas must stand together against Cutler and Jones before they start to fall one by one.
The movie ends in a climactic battle at a giant maelstrom where the fate of each character is decided there.
Generally, the movie this time is much darker than the previous ones. There’s less comedy, less visuals but more drama and a much more complicated storyline.
Story-wise, the movie doesn’t merely tell a fictional legend about ghosts and treasures like the previous Pirates movies. It’s more about different people standing together and facing their common enemy no matter what the consequences are. Some may find this change from the previous films annoying, but in my opinion, I think it gives the movie a more realistic feeling and the dark atmosphere of the story doesn’t make us feel as safe as in previous movies, where we knew that all characters were going to live in the end. Surprisingly, some characters become darker, while some others tend to become more human and there’s no way you can predict how the story goes.
The direction is great. Although the movie stood at almost three hours, there was not a boring moment (unlike Jackson’s King Kong, which could have been much better with more editing). I am happy that the director didn’t just edit the hell out of the movie to make it shorter to satisfy more audience. I mean come on, this is the end of the trilogy, it HAS to be long. I have become a fan of Gore Verbinsky now!
The best thing in this movie is cinematography. You can notice how the camera works in a spectacular way throughout the movie. The camera even plays a major character in certain scenes. Personally, I liked how the whole waterfall scene was shot, and there was this view, just before the waterfall scene, where the ship was sailing through dark water in a sky full of stars…this was just one of the best images of the movie for me. A rather “disturbing” scene was when Jack Sparrow gets off his ship to find himself in the middle of a desert. It was just how the camera captured the emptiness of the place, and the rather subtle music in the background, that made this scene the most disturbing for me.
The acting this time is more than fascinating. By now, we are all accustomed to the fact that Johnny Depp makes a funny entrance at the beginning of each movie of the franchise. Well, this time his entrance is unlike anything you’ve seen before. I don’t want to spoil it for you, you just have to go and see it for yourself!
Johnny Depp, as usual, delivers a performance that really shows how special an actor he is. But this time, I was surprised by how great the acting of some other characters was: Geoffrey Rush (Hektor Barbossa) makes every scene that he appears in very special. Also Tom Hollander (Cutler Beckett) gets a bigger screen time this movie and delivers a great performance as one of the main antagonists.
Most noticably, Hans Zimmer takes a giant leap in this movie to compose a score that doesn’t fail the epic proportions of the movie. Although I thought that the score for Dead Man’s Chest didn’t meet my expectations after what I’ve heard in The Curse of the Black Pearl, the music in this movie is the best so far, with a lot of new themes that really bring the movie to life.
So in conclusion, this movie is, in my opinion, the best in the franchise so far, although I don’t think that it will be met with the same admiration by everyone.
Don’t go expecting to watch some computer-generated effects and have a few laughs (for that, you can go watch Spider-man 3). You should go expecting a much darker movie, a complicated storyline (go revise the previous two movies before watching this one) and rather some disturbing scenes. But you SHOULD go. You don’t want to miss a movie like this.
I am really satisfied with this movie and the way it has changed from the previous ones. I am expecting it to recieve an oscar for best cinematography, best screen play, best actor (Johnny Depp) and maybe even best supporting actor going to Geoffrey Rush or Tom Hollander. I think it may also win some technical awards such as best costume design, best make up, best art direction and set decoration, best sound editing but not best visual effects though (I think that will go to Spider-man 3), and unless someone makes a much stronger score this year, Hans Zimmer may win his first Oscar since The Lion King!

After a long and dangerous journey through the cavern, they finally arrive at the pyramid, deep in a valley surrounded by mountains.
The villains capture the two, and continue to summon the power of the skull. As the villains place the skull on it\’s respective alter ,they are errupt in flames. Dr. Jones realizes that their skull, was a skull of peace.

LaBeouf Accidentally Unveils ‘Indiana Jones’ Title
Rising star Shia LaBeouf has accidentally revealed the new “Indiana Jones” title at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The “Transformers” star was speaking to journalists at the VMAs in Las Vegas on Sunday — when he let slip that the next installment will be called “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
The title had been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced earlier this year that a fourth installment of the blockbuster adventure series was being made.
The iconic character, played by Harrison Ford, hasn’t been seen on the big screen since 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”
