The remains of a woman believed to be Queen Eadgyth, an early English monarch, was found in a tomb beneath the Magdeburg Catherdral in Germany. Queen Eadgyth (also being called Princess Ealdgyth), was the sister of King Athelstan, who ruled England from 924-939 AD, daughter of Edward the Elder, and granddaughter of Alfred the Great. Queen/Princess Eadgyth is also known as Edith of England.Queen Eadgyth married Otto I at age 19, and died at age 36. The tomb containg Queen Eadgyth’s remains was first believed to be a cenotaph: a tomb built as a monument to a person whose remains are elsewhere (or lost). Bristol University’s Department of Archaeology is doing isotope matching tests with the remains against places where Queen Eadgyth was known to have lived.Eadgyth was the sister of King Athelstan and the granddaughter of Alfred the Great. She was given in marriage to Otto I, the Holy Roman Emperor, in 929, and bore three children before her death in 946 at the age of 36.*This undated ima

In a feat that could one day result in groundbreaking new cancer treatments, British scientists have identified genetic mutations that lead to lung cancer and melanoma. The findings were published December 16, 2009 in the journal Nature. Researchers at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, England, took cancerous cells from two patients — one with melanoma and one with lung cancer — and compared them to normal, healthy cells taken from the same individuals. Nearly 23,000 cell changes (called mutations) were found in the lung cancer genome, while more than 30,000 were found in the melanoma genome. While most mutations are harmless, the more mutations that occur, the more likely it is one will lead to cancer. The findings are remarkable because this is the first time that almost all of the mutations in the genomes of lung cancer and melanoma have been revealed. Even more important, the techniques used in this study allowed the researchers to identify what caused the mutations

The Spain midfielder, who scored twice before limping out of Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Barcelona, but insists he is focused on his recovery and helping the London club win trophies.”There has been talk about (Real and Barca) since the summer and the only thing I am doing is thinking about my club, Arsenal, and seeing how I can help my team mates,” the Arsenal captain told Marca.”The only thing that concerns me right now is this injury. I want to get over this little muscle problem I have at the moment as soon as possible.”Fabregas, his club’s top scorer with 12 goals, claims Arsenal are well placed to win trophies this season.”I have a cool head, I am very happy at Arsenal and in England and there is still a lot for me to do,” he said.”That’s all I can say to you. I am not thinking about anything else. I am very content and have a good deal still to do in the Premier League.”

England, go into the World Cup 2010 draw as one of the eight top seeds but Beckham insists they should not be concerned about who will end up in their group. The England midfield, who is currently in Cape Town promoting England’s 2018 World Cup bid, said: “It’s always good to be seeded and be up there with the best teams in the world but in the World Cup it’s not about staying away from certain teams.”If you want to go all the way in the competition you have to come up against them at some point. You are going to have to beat the best teams and the best players so it doesn’t really matter when you come up against them.”England head coach Fabio Capello echoed Beckham’s sentiments but also said he believes an African side will make it to the semi-finals in South Africa next summer.”I think about the Africans and I believe this will be one of the most important World Cups for the African teams,” he said.”I believe one of these countries will get to the last four.”I saw the Ivory Coast play

Close your eyes and try to imagine the scenes of jubilation across Africa if a team from the continent were to win the 2010 World Cup.A celebration like no other, one billion people revelling in one of the greatest sporting and cultural achievements. For the first time in its 80-year history, football’s blue riband competition is coming to the world’s poorest and most underdeveloped land. How better to mark the occasion than with a first African champion?606: DEBATENot so long ago the mere suggestion that an African team might win a World Cup would have been dismissed out of hand - all of a sudden, the idea no longer seems far-fetched. Could this be Africa’s time?David O, BBC Sport”Winning the World Cup would be one of the proudest moments in the history of that country and our continent as a whole,” former South Africa striker Shaun Bartlett told BBC Sport.”Every African nation has its internal problems but football can do wonders for people and nations, which is a huge incentive.”Nobod

Fabio Capello’s men were handed a relatively straightforward draw for the group stages of World Cup 2010, with their first game taking place against the USA in Rustenberg on Saturday June 12.That will be followed by fixtures against Algeria in Cape Town six days later and Slovenia in Port Elizabeth on June 23.England, one of the eight seeded nations, will expect to progress against Algeria and Slovenia, while the United States, arguably the strongest team in their pot, reached the quarter-finals in 2002 and reached the final of the Confederations Cup last year. But with potential bogey teams France, Portugal, Ivory Coast all safely avoided, they will be relieved to have avoided the so-called ‘Group of Death’.That title looks like heading to Group G, where Brazil were drawn with Portugal, Ivory Coast and North Korea. The opening match of the tournament’s game schedule will see hosts South Africa taking on Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg on June 11.Holders Italy were drawn in Group F

Despite his squeaky-clean image, Kaká is not the kind of player to keep quiet if he is unhappy. He does not pretend to be enthusiastic about flying to Doha for a friendly match whose location was dictated by an obese purse offered to the Brazilian FA and is part of a trip that includes a second fixture against Oman, a poor side from a rich country. There is, however, the small matter of an opportunity to cross swords with England and the chance to evaluate what this keen observer of the English game has previously noticed from distance: the transformation brought about by Fabio Capello.”These friendlies taking place far from where we are routinely based take their toll on the players because they add extra hours for flights and everything,” Kaká says. “But then it’s England, with about eight months to go to the World Cup and just after they have cruised through the European qualifiers in a group that was not easy at all. I don’t think anybody expected them to go through so strongly,

Five years after he made Earth freeze over in “The Day After Tomorrow,” director Roland Emmerich is wreaking more havoc, this time with “2012.”The disaster epic, which opens November 13 via Sony, sees the end of the world come from solar flares that cause the Earth’s core to melt and shift tectonic plates. While the movie is preposterous, and recycles a set piece three times, you can’t deny the mesmerizing quality of devastation, especially on the big screen.During Tuesday’s world premiere in downtown Los Angeles, Mickey Rooney began clapping during the epilogue, leading the crowd to applause during the credits.”When you normally see disasters, you always see the aftermath; movies actually show it happening,” theorized Emmerich at the after-party as to why those kinds of movies are popular. People are fascinated.”While the German native got out of the directing gate with “Universal Soldier” and “Stargate,” it was the 1996 alien-invasion disaster movie “Independence Day” that really made

England striker Wayne Rooney has said he hopes former Manchester United team mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal fail to qualify for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.”It would be nice to see Portugal not there because, in the last two tournaments (World Cup 2006, Euro 2004), they’ve knocked us out,” British newspapers quoted him as saying on Friday before England’s penultimate World Cup qualifier in Ukraine.”When we didn’t qualify for Euro 2008, we (the United players) got a lot of stick (from Ronaldo).”England have already qualified for the finals in South Africa while Portugal are third in Group One and must win both their remaining matches against Hungary and Malta while hoping Sweden drop points to reach the playoffs.Rooney was sent off against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in a match that triggered a media backlash against Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward had suggested to the referee that Rooney should be sent off and was then see
